Following their abrupt exit in the North American VALORANT Last Chance Qualifiers (NA LCQ), FaZe Clan’s VALORANT hopes diminished. With team morale at an all time low, and a comeback unlikely, Hunter “BabyJ” Schline opted to exit the roster and leave the team. With only four remaining active players on the roster, and no reserves, rebuilding the team would be costly.
With very little tournament earnings due to an extensive history of abysmal performances, the four remaining players needed to look for new opportunities in the VALORANT scene if they wished to have a future with the game. Luckily for Shane “Rawkus” Flaherty, Sentinels had an opening.
Sentinels are one of the most prolific teams in VALORANT history. Although the VALORANT professional scene is still in its infancy stages, Sentinels have managed to accrue quite the reputation.
Since their acquisition of Tyson “TenZ” Ngo, a gifted player considered by many to be the current “GOAT,” Sentinels have decorated their headquarters with two major victories. Having won both Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the 2021 VALORANT Championship Series (VCT), Sentinels are the only team with two VCT stage titles, and one of two teams to claim a stage title.
To further emphasize the prowess of this team, Sentinels have done all this without a coach. In fact, that role has remained empty since their inception. Instead, Shazheb “ShahZaM” Khan, the team’s in-game leader (IGL), has taken on the role himself.
Following their shocking upset to Team Envy in the 2021 VCT Stage 3 playoffs quarterfinals and subsequent elimination from the tournament, the coachless champions decided that crucial changes were necessary. Although it is not clear how long they have been looking for a coach, their acquisition of Flaherty came just 11 days after FaZe Clan’s exit from the NA LCQ and 5 days after Schline left the FaZe Clan roster.
Who is Rawkus?
Shane “Rawkus” Flaherty is a professional VALORANT player formerly contracted by FaZe Clan. Flaherty was originally signed to FaZe Clan back in August of 2020 just after they signed NA rising star Andrej “babybay” Francisty.
After his signing, FaZe Clan put on predominantly mediocre performances, consistently overshadowed by better NA teams such as Sentinels and 100 Thieves; however, they have one victory under their belt from the 2021 VCT NA Stage 1 Challengers 3 tournament, where they brought home $20,000 for their 3-0 victory over 100 Thieves.
Ironically, their largest cash prize came off of the 2021 VCT NA Stage 1 Masters, where they came second to Sentinels, earning $30,000 but granting Sentinels the title of Stage 1 Champions.
Following Schline’s exit from the roster, Rawkus opted to take his VALORANT knowledge and prowess to new heights. Rawkus officially signed with Sentinels on November 8th and is set to be their first ever coach. With the 2021 VALORANT Champions tournament on the horizon, things are looking up for Sentinels.
With the addition of Rawkus to the roster, one of the tournament’s top teams are in a good position to seize the first ever international VCT title.
