Reports Indicate Mikyx Will Return to G2 Esports for 2023

After a brief stint with Excel, it appears Mihael “Mikyx” Mehle might be getting called back to G2 Esports. The former G2 star moved to Excel following G2’s acquisition of bot lane duo Victor “Flakked” Lirola Tortosa and Raphaël “Targamas” Crabbé.

While both players drastically outperformed expectations this year, G2 Esports seems to be headed into an entirely new direction. This news comes after it was leaked that Steven “Hans sama” Liv would be replacing Flakked on the G2 lineup.

While both Tortosa and star jungler Marcin “Jankos” Jankowski were revealed to be on the chopping block for 2023, there was no indication that Crabbé would be replaced as well.

What’s Going on With G2 Esports?

Following their underwhelming 1-5 exit from the Group Stage of the 2022 World Championship, G2 Esports seem to be eager to ensure a poor result like that will not happen again. The reveal of Mehle’s transfer once again comes from reputable League of Legends insider and renowned leaker Brieuc “LEC Wooloo” Seeger. His entire announcement is as follows:

[Sources] Mikyx is set to join G2 Esports as he will be replacing Targamas in the support position.
Mikyx and his former teammate Hans Sama wanted to join a team together. He will therefore return to his former organization after a year with Excel.

Assuming Brieuc’s previous leak regarding Liv’s transfer to G2 Esports is correct, Liv and Mehle will be reuniting for the first time since 2017. The two previously played together on Misfits Gaming for one year before Mehle was acquired by G2.

While they were unable to accomplish much together then, both players have improved tremendously since. With G2, Mehle became part of the “superteam” that made it to Worlds Finals in 2019. Although that roster has since disbanded, Mehle’s performance with them has marked him as one of the best support players in LEC history.

Liv rose to similar success. Although he has never made a Worlds Finals appearance, he did gain the admiration and respect of one of the best ADCs in League of Legends history for his performance in scrims against Gen.G.

Ruler, Gen.G’s longest tenured player, has stated in multiple interviews that he respects Liv and hopes to face him on the Worlds stage at some point. The two have only ever played against one another in scrims. While Ruler was in attendance at Worlds this year, Liv missed out after Team Liquid was defeated by Evil Geniuses for the last LCS spot at Worlds.

G2 in 2023

Alongside Jankos’ announcement that he would be leaving G2 after five years with the team, the departures of both Flakked and Targamas leave only recently acquired top laner Sergen “BrokenBlade” Çelik and superstar mid laner Rasmus “caPs” Borregaard Winther from the 2022 lineup.

While Jankos’ departure is the most surprising, G2 has also reportedly been looking into acquiring Javier “Elyoya” Prades Batalla from MAD Lions. No news has been released regarding Batalla’s intentions; however, MAD Lions’ failure to make it out of the Worlds Play-Ins stage spells poor things for the team’s future.
