Copenhagen Flames Qualify For PGL Major Legends Stage

The Danish Counter-Strike: Global Offensive team, Copenhagen Flames, have qualified for the Legends Stage of the PGL Major Stockholm 2021. The current no.14 team have exceeded everyone’s expectations and are now through to the penultimate stage of the $2,000,000 tournament.

A Perfect Record

Copenhagen Flames started their quest for the CS:GO Major title in the best way possible. On the first day of action, the Flames defeated the defending champions, Astralis, to which they added a commanding victory against BIG to round up a flawless day.

Heading into the second day of play with a 2-0 record, Copenhagen Flames needed just one more W to qualify for the next stage. And the Danes did not hesitate to get the job done.

On Wednesday, October 27, the Flames met with domestic rivals, Heroic, who were expected to win the bout. However, things did start as planned for Heroic, who lost the first map (Vertigo) with 7-16.

Heroic bounced back with a 16-11 victory on Nuke but couldn’t close the series out. Instead, the Copenhagen Flames proved all the doubters wrong and won the series 2-1, with a convincing 16-12 victory on Overpass.

With that, the Flames produced a perfect run and emerged as one of only two teams to end the New Challengers Stage without a loss. The other team is FaZe Clan, who have won against Team Spirit, ENCE, and Virtus.pro.

An Underdog Story

Copenhagen Flames entered the PGL Major Stockholm 2021 as one of the outsiders, and rightfully so. The Copenhagen Flames haven’t achieved much early into their new project as a team that initiated a roster rebuild in May 2021.

However, consistency and slow improvement eventually paid off. The Danish squad climbed up the global ladder over the months, starting from no.59 and rising all the way to no.14 by October.

Although the Flames haven’t won any notable tournaments over the year, they have consistently done well. After finishing second in BLAST Nordic Masters: Fall 2021 in September, Flames went on to place top-four at the Funspark ULTI 2021: Europe Season 3, which gave them the needed boost to deliver on the big stage.

Copenhagen Flames attended Intel Extreme Masters XVI – Fall: Europe at the start of October, where they have done exceptionally well, placing seventh. And while they have failed to claim the title, the Danes have shown plenty of quality.

En route to a seventh-place finish, Copenhagen Flames defeated some of the world’s highest-rated teams, including mousesports, BIG, G2 Esports. Although relatively minor achievements, Flames proved they what it takes to compete with the best.

One Step Closer To Major Title

Although no one expects Copenhagen Flames to win the CS:GO Major title, the Danish squad has done enough to earn the community’s respect. But, their job is far from over.

Making it out of the New Challengers Stage was only the first hurdle the Flames had to overcome. And while advancing into the Legends Stage is a commendable achievement, the real test will begin now.

In the PGL Major Stockholm Legends Stage, Copenhagen Flames will meet with some of the best teams in the world, including Natus Vincere, Team Vitality, Team Liquid, G2 Esports, and Ninjas in Pyjamas.

Joining the field are also Evil Geniuses, FURIA Esports, and FaZe Clan. As it stands now, there are still six more vacant spots left to be filled by teams who will advance from the Challengers Stage.

The New Legends Stage is slated for October 30 – November 2, featuring a 16-team Swiss System Format. Like the first stage, it will also use the Buchholz system to determine the seeding for the final four rounds.

The top eight teams from the New Legends stage will advance into the playoffs, where they’ll compete for the CS:GO Major championship title and the lion’s share of the $2,000,000 prize pool.
